Here you will learn how and why you can link related assets together.

Have you ever wondered where the winter tires of a specific company car are stored? Or would you like to group several individual assets into one unit for your accounting system?

By linking assets, you always keep track of items that belong together. You create logical groups—for example, a complete “employee hardware set”—and gain absolute transparency. In this article, we will show you how this works in the web application.

To be able to link assets, you first need a suitable asset field. To do this, go to Settings in the menu bar and select Asset fields.

Click the Create field button in the top left corner and select Linked assets as the field type.

Now assign a suitable field name, such as “Associated assets”. Next, select a field group. Make sure to set the field to be displayed and editable in the web app, so you can perform the next steps. Additionally, use the checkbox to decide whether this field should also be displayed in the mobile app for quick adjustments on the go. Finally, save your settings by clicking Add.

Tip:

Would you like to learn more about creating asset fields? We recommend reading our article “How do I create new object fields?”.

Once the preparation is complete, you can start using your new field. Navigate to the Assets section in the menu. First, open the asset list and switch to the detailed view of the asset you want to define as the “main item” (e.g., a laptop). Scroll down in the details to your newly created link field.

As soon as you click the search field, you can search for the asset you want to link (for example, a keyboard). You are completely flexible here: simply search through various asset fields depending on the information you have at hand. Besides the scan code, this could be the serial number or the exact description of the asset (1).

On the right side of the search bar, you can choose whether you want to search through all the assets in your system or only those that do not have another link yet and are therefore “free” (2).

Tip:

It is always worth storing as much information about your assets in seventhings as possible. This makes searching easier for you, as you have more flexibility in choosing your search terms.

Click the desired items to add them and confirm your selection by clicking Save.

In the list view of your assets, you can display the Linked assets field so that you can see all existing links at a glance.

💡 Pro tips for your daily work 💡

  • Quick navigation between items When you click a linked asset in the detail view, the screen immediately jumps to its details. This allows you to quickly switch back and forth between related items without having to perform a new search every time.

  • Marking grouped items for accounting Would you like to create a virtual asset out of several sub-assets? Give the grouped item a clear identifier! For example, use a scan code with a fixed prefix, such as “GI” for Grouped Item (or “SP” for Sammelposten). This way, when you export data to your accounting system, you can see at first glance that it is a grouped asset.

  • Keep your auditor happy Is your auditor asking where the individual items grouped under a central asset number are located? Simply open seventhings, enter the asset number in the link field, and prove the current location of every single item in just a few seconds.
