Have you ever wondered where the winter tires for a specific company car are stored, or which mouse Mr. Doe received with his laptop? By linking assets, you always keep track of items that belong together. Here we will show you the benefits and how it works in practice.

What are the benefits of linking assets?

  • Absolute transparency: Create logical groups. For example, link a laptop with its corresponding charger, headset, and mouse to form a complete "employee bundle."

  • Faster inventory & handover: When you know exactly which accessories belong to which main device, you save yourself a long search during returns or location changes.

  • Get everything done right on site: No need to go back to your desk! Thanks to the app, you can link assets the exact moment you are standing physically in front of them.

Prerequisite:

Before you can get started in the app, an asset field called "Linked Assets" must be created in the web application and made visible for the app.

We explain step-by-step how to create this field and ensure that you can edit it in the app in this article: How do I link objects to one another?

Once the preparations on the web are complete, you can start right away with your smartphone. To do this, open the seventhings app. Take the asset you want to define as the "main item" (e.g., a laptop). You can either search for the asset via the list or — even faster — scan the label directly to access the asset's detail view. Scroll down to the Linked Assets field.

As soon as you tap this field, a search mask opens. Here you can now search for the asset to be linked (e.g., the mouse). You can search through various asset fields depending on what information you have about the item to be linked. Along with the scan code, this could also be the serial number or the name of an asset, for example. To select the field, click on the small triangle next to the scan code on the right side of the search bar.

Note:

Right below the search bar, you can choose whether you want to select from all assets in your instance or only from those that do not have another link yet (they are "free").

By clicking on the asset to be linked, you will return to the detail view of the main asset. The previously selected asset is now linked to it. Click on Save.

Tip:

If you tap on a linked asset in the app, the view instantly jumps to its detail page. This allows you to quickly switch back and forth between related devices without having to search for them all over again.
