Custom fields are the key to an inventory database that fits your processes perfectly. Instead of working with standard fields, you can use self-created fields to capture exactly the information that matters to you. This saves time during data entry and makes your data much easier to evaluate later.

Do you already know how to create new object fields and would rather edit the properties of your existing fields? If so, have a look at our article ‘How can I edit inventory fields?’
Open Settings (1) and navigate to Object fields (2). Then click Create field (3) to create your own field.
Now choose the appropriate field type — there's the right format for every kind of information.
Here's a brief explanation of each:
Text and long text: for describing objects, manufacturer’s instructions or personal notes
Dropdown: e.g. to describe the condition of the inventory item (“New”, “To be scrapped”...) or to display categories (IT, furniture, vehicles, ...)
Link: here you can insert a link, e.g. to the manufacturer
Integer: e.g. the year of manufacture or year of purchase, as well as non-alphanumeric numbers
Decimal: e.g. for area measurements
Currency: e.g. for the purchase price
Date: Date of purchase or similar
Attachment: PDFs, contracts or reports can be attached here
Yes/No: is part of / is not part of ...
Person: This field displays a list of all the people you have registered as individuals in seventhings. You can use this field, for example, to specify which employee is responsible for a particular inventory item.
Linked objects: Here you can link several related inventories.

Give the field a meaningful field name and, for dropdown fields, define your desired options. Also decide using several on/off switches where and how the field is used:
Should it be displayed in the detail view of the web app and be editable there?
What about visibility and editability in the smartphone app?
Additionally, set whether it's a required field (must be filled before saving) and whether it should be searchable via quick search.
Assign the field to a field group and optionally set a default value. If needed, you can also add a description text so all seventhings users know exactly what to enter in that field. Click Advanced to reveal additional fields to better describe the value to be entered.
Here you can set a minimum and maximum length for the entry as well as a format: Numeric, Alphanumeric, or VIN (vehicle identification number). For some entries, it can be useful to require that the entered value be unique to avoid duplicates. Click Save once you've made all settings.
